The militia was rearmed with the Long Lee in 1897. The diamond jubilee was in 1897 as was the 30th anniversary of confederation so the 1896 date could be a misprint.

It would have been the P'53 Enfield rifles in the early Fenian days and the Snider-Enfield towards the last parts of the Fenians.-Ryan
